University of Sussex
The Centre has been a successful participant in many ESPRIT projects - Spirit, Spectre, Smile, Monograph and GraphMem - involving the design of VLSI devices (ASICs and FPGAs), software algorithms and systems applicable to virtual reality and virtual environments. The Centre is expert in the use of Visual Basic, C/C++ and Java used to develop new algorithms and architectures for computer graphics including photo-realistic rendering for image synthesis. The Centre researches into multimedia, virtual reality and the generation of virtual environments using knowledge-based systems. Professor Paul Lister, Dr Martin White and Philip Watten, full-time faculty members in the School of Engineering and Information Technology, will represent the University of Sussex. Contract research and support staff as appropriate will perform detailed technical work. Paul Lister is a Professor of Electronics and Director of the Centre for VLSI and Computer Graphics in the School of Engineering and Information Technology, University of Sussex. Paul Lister has an MSc in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Aston 1972) and a PhD in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Aston 1975). He has authored or co-authored over 146 publications including a textbook on microprocessors. Paul Lister has led, as Project Manager for Sussex, nine ESPRIT projects. He acted as Project Coordinator for the MONOGRAPH project. He is also acted as an ESPRIT reviewer in Framework IV. Martin White is a Senior Lecturer in Electronic Engineering and senior manager in the Centre for VLSI and Computer Graphics. He has held several posts within the Centre on EU Esprit projects: MONOGRAPH as a Research Fellow, SPECTRE as a Research Fellow, and SPIRIT as a Research Officer. Previously he worked in the UK defence industry: the Royal Navy and Aeronautical and General Instruments, and the Telecommunications industry with Landys and Gyr. Martin has a PhD in Three Dimensional Computer Graphics Rendering and a BSc (Hons) in Computer Systems Engineering both from the University of Sussex. He has authored or co-authored 70 publications including conference papers, journals and invited papers in computer graphics. His current research interests include use of virtual and augmented reality in cultural heritage applications. Philip Watten is the Media Technology Manager in the School of Engineering and Information Technology and a Research Fellow in the Centre for VLSI and Computer Graphics. He is currently writing up his research results for his PhD. He has worked as a research officer on the GraphMem ESPRIT project, during which time he has authored or co-authored 11 papers concerning computer graphics. He currently manages the Media Technology Laboratory, a new £300K+ investment by the University in multimedia teaching, learning and research. His research interests lie in video, multimedia and computer graphics. |
