  The Roman Villa - Construction

detail phase AB plan of foundation of building 3

our virtual reconstrcution of Building 3 was based on the hypothetical reconstruction drawing made by David J.A. Taylor, see the image on the left.

Unfortunately, to date the number of excavations carried out at Fishbourne o this building has been limited, so a positive idea of the building's functionis not yet clear. Excavations have revealed several clues however,

A vertical-sided pit was excavated inside the central room in the eastern range of the roman villa. It seemed that it was constructed very carefully in order to line the floor. Some stones were found but there was no indication of how the sides of this pit were retained.

In addition, a deposit of dark brown and black silty clay was discovered during the excavation of the north-eastern part.

There was little evidence about the building's actual structure. But excavations revealed 427 small finds from the middle deposits. Despite the quality of small finds, there were no evidences of metal findings; the bulk finds indicated the existance of ceramic building material. These bulk finds indicated that the deposits were plenty of pottery, meal debris such us animal bones and some building materials.

Finally, there was evidence that some pilasters of the doric order existed.
