  Roman Soldiers - Aquilifier

  Legion XI Claudia Pia Fidelis

In Roman times there were three main types of standard. The eagle (aquila) was the standard of the whole legion. The eagle never left camp unless the whole legion set out and the first cohort guarded it. During the time of Ceasar these eagle standards were made of silver and gold and later on they were made from solid gold.

The body defence of scales is called a lorica plumata because the pine scales resemble feathers. He is wearing leather upper arm and kilt defences (pteryges), for protection, over a tunic. Although eagle bearers were usually bare headed it might be expected for them to wear a helmet in combat. His weapons are a sword (gladius) and a dagger.

Animal skins were worn over the helmet with bearskins being popular with legionaries and feline pelts with Preatorians. He is carrying the eagle standard (aquila) and a small round shield for protection.
